Who Can Be Against Us?

It was unbelief that kept the Children of Israel from entering the promised land, and it is that same unbelief that will keep us from entering the promised life of peace, provision, safety, and blessing in this life.
Romans 8:31 “If God is for us, then who can be against us?”
Like many verses in the scriptures, this one is marked as a favorite for its powerful message to comfort those in trial or opposition. I wonder though, how many people really believe this? We must be careful that the scriptures don’t just become sort of a nice thought, but instead, a sure reality. A merely nice thought is not what I believe the Holy Spirit, nor Paul had in mind when penning these great words, for it comes just after exalting the sovereignty of our God, not only in the salvation of His people, but in all things. He is therefore able to cause all things to work together for the good, for those who love God and are called by Him for His purposes. Is there any other way to be called by God? Can God call a man only for that man to turn and fulfill a purpose that God has not predestined?
“What shall we say to these things? If God is for us, then who can be against us?” Since he is a God who predestines, since He is all powerful, and all knowing, we can also know that the answer to Paul’s rhetorical question is an emphatic, “No one!” So when there is opposition in our lives, and that of astronomical proportions, God is still in control. When loved ones die too soon, and children are being massacred in our schools, God is not unaware or complacent. The promise is that absolutely no one can be against us if we are His children. Until this is believed fully in the heart of a believer, and until we stop asking God in defeat, why did you let these things happen? we also, like the Children of Israel, will not enter fully into the promise of rest in Jesus.
Romans 8:32 “He who did not spare His own Son, but gave Him up for us all, how will He not also with Him graciously give us all things?”
The challenge today is to believe God at His Word. If He is for you, then absolutely no one can be against you. Through the sacrifice of Christ we receive an inheritance no less then what the Son Himself inherits. In Christ Jesus we have peace, safety, security, wisdom, rest, hope, and above all, eternal life.
